The institution was first established as ‘Chitrakala Vidyalaya’ under the Karnataka Chitrakala Parishath in 1964. The founder secretary of the institution is late M.S.Nanjunda Rao was instrumental in establishing and nurturing the institute.

The institution was upgraded into a Degree college in 1983, Affiliated to Bengaluru Central University. This college offers various courses on fine arts and designs. It has the Bachelor of Visual Arts (B.V.A) and Master of Visual Art (M.V.A). The institution consists of seven discreet departments of Painting, Sculpture, Graphic Art, Art History, Applied Art, and Animation & Ceramics.

The interested candidates need to undertake a regular course of first and second language English and Kannada (or Hindi or Additional English) as per the University requirement. The language of instruction is English. This autonomous institution will function under the guidance of the Governing Body, Academic Council, and Board of Studies. The institution has made its mark in the field of fine arts education in India. This is not just an institution; it is an established cultural landmark and a place for cultural tourism. The institution is attached to a cluster of 13 museums which carefully curating the preserved culture of folk, tribal, traditional, modern, and contemporary art works.

The institution is constantly creating the vibrant inspiration highlighting and incorporating state of the art projects from emerging designers from JD School of Design and the JD Institute of Fashion Technology. The grand event was graced by the presence of pioneers like Livspace, Bonito, Outdoor Connections, Pidilite, and Wall Queen Interiors, Mahendra Decor Walls and more notable names of Interior design industry.  This event played a pivotal role in offering the young talents a vivacious platform to showcase their talents in front of the legends and business tycoons.
