Rua Ecospaces: Elevating the Standard of Green Architecture Practices

The landscape of architectural services in India is evolving significantly, as focus shifts towards creating green spaces. With sustainability and eco-consciousness becoming the need of the hour, people are more inclined towards demanding spaces that go beyond simple green building certifications, but rather, are sustainable on their own accord. Standards such as Passivhaus have become vital considerations, helping clients ensure their living standards are improving while reducing their carbon footprint on the planet.

However, this domain is still in its nascent stages, with very few players striving to enhance its prevalence. The Mumbai-based RUA Ecospaces, founded in 2023 by the visionary Dr. Roshni Udyavar Yehuda is making tremendous strides, providing sustainability and consulting services across India and internationally. Thriving on the expertise of a multidisciplinary team of professionals, environmental experts, energy specialists and technical consultants who share a common vision of creating ‘Ecospaces ’compatible with a sustainable environment, RUA is revamping the scope of green building consulting solutions.

Green Consulting Solutions

RUA Ecospaces offers sustainability consultancy services encompassing audit, design, certification and planning in the fields of architecture, interiors, environment and energy to its diverse clientele, focused on leveraging technological advancements to create functional, comfortable and low-impact architecture that borrows from tradition and integrates contemporary aesthetics. RUA's key service offerings include green audit solutions, green building and design certification services, green interiors, training and capacity building, sustainability reporting solutions, and sustainable design services.

“Our mission is to create resource-efficient & humane spaces catering to human comfort in an inclusive design process with the client, our team and the unique environment of the place.

Rua Ecospaces: Elevating the Standard of Green Architecture Practices

We create 'Ecospaces' - environment friendly and energy efficient spaces compatible with a sustainable environment as well as certify, assess and audit them through scientific analysis and innovative methods, context-specific sustainable solutions using low impact materials and technologies", says Dr. Roshni.

In the short span since its inception, the company has taken proactive steps to accomplish this mission, reaching out to over 1000 colleges across India to create green and sustainable campuses through online webinars and outreach programs in collaboration with educational institutions.

Through these solutions, the firm has enabled colleges and universities to achieve their sustainability goals and attain higher NAAC grades, while also becoming the first architecture-led firm with ISO/IEC 17020:2012 accreditation for Green Audit from NABCB.

Apart from this, RUA has also bagged the Platinum certification and five star rating in green buildings for some of its most prestigious projects including the Agrocel House, Headquarters of AGROCEL Industries in Bhuj, Kutch and the NAHAR Excalibur - which has been dubbed as Mumbai’s first luxury residential project to be 5-star GEM rated.

But the list of contributions made and milestones achieved keeps going on. Ever since its founding, RUA has left no stone unturned to maximize sustainability in design and construction, beautifully conceptualizing and realizing spaces where humans can coexist with nature.

Journey & Future Roadmap

RUA Ecospaces’ journey began with Roshni Udyavar, who embarked on a journey in 1998 with the International Institute for Sustainable Future (IISF), an international NGO based in Mumbai and New York, starting to work as an architect in an ecovillage project in Dahanu, and later, Head of the Sustainable Development Program at the Institute, where she garnered global perspective and experience on environmental research, writing, project management, traveling to more than 15 countries and contributing to books and research publications.

In 2003, she joined as the Head of the Postgraduate program in Environmental Architecture at Rachana Sansad, while simultaneously leading experts in environmental and social projects including the Dahisar River restoration project, Sawantwadi Ecotourism project, ECBC implementation roadmap and many more, laying the foundation of Roshni Udyavar and Associates in 2005, taking up sustainable projects, albeit at a small scale.

During the pandemic, she launched a series of online training programs on Energy Efficient and Climate Responsive Building Design, Green Audit and others, eventually expanding into the four core areas of architecture, interiors, energy and environment. Evolving from that company, the new RUA Ecospaces is the embodiment of Roshni’s vision to reduce the impact of built spaces and conserve the environment and ecology.

“RUA’s uniqueness lies in its intensive academic and research background over more than two decades in the field of environment and energy, clubbed with the skills of a designer and architect. Currently in the green building ‘consultancy’ space, RUA’s vision is to ‘create’sustainable Ecospaces including buildings, housing, neighborhoods and settlements in both urban and rural settings with a goal towards net zero and low-impact architecture at a global level”, adds Dr. Roshni.

As the company looks towards a growth-driven future, it aims to diversify into more verticals while simultaneously working to increase the intensity of its existing spectrum of offerings. With this objective, the firm will focus on holistic solutions that promote sustainable construction through careful selection of materials, and choice of processes, technologies, and metrics to encompass passive design, energy efficiency, renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, wastewater treatment, vegetation, biodiversity and regenerative farming. Through these approaches, the firm aims to set new benchmarks in the green development sector in the coming years.
