Maharashtra signs MoU to build 12,000 houses for Mumbai Dabbawalas under PMAY

On September 13, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that 12,000 houses will be constructed in Mumbai within three years dabbawalas and members of the 'charmakar' (cobbler) community under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY).

The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) will implement the project under the Central government's Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme. According to a statement from Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's office, Priyanka Homes Realty will provide a 30-acre plot, and Naman Builders will carry out the project on a no-profit-no-loss basis.

As part of the scheme, 500 sq ft homes will be offered for Rs.25 lakh, fulfilling the dream of dabbawalas (tiffin carriers) to own homes, the statement added. Fadnavis also mentioned that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with developers to carry out the housing project.

In his post on 'X' Devendra Fadnavis said"For over 100 years, dabbawalas have been serving the people of Mumbai. Under this scheme, 12,000 houses will be built for them, making their long-held dream of owning a home in Mumbai a reality within the next three years."

He also added,"Today, dabbawalas have gained global recognition and are the subject of international research. Despite their global reach, they have remained true to their principles and loyalties, which is why they are being rewarded with these rightful homes. The state government will extend all necessary support to ensure the swift completion of this project."

On July 23, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced a Rs.10 lakh crore allocation for PM Awas Yojana Urban 2.0. The 2024 Budget also reinstated interest subsidies under the flagship scheme, earmarking Rs.4,000 crore for the Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS).
