KMC makes the online application mandatory for approval of new building plan

The building department of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has mandated online applications for the approval of building plans for new constructions. Mayor Firhad Hakim announced that manual applications will only be accepted for seeking approval of plans for modifications to existing structures and the reconstruction of unsafe buildings.

A few years ago, the KMC implemented an online system for the approval of building plans. The mayor asserted that this transparent and efficient system has received positive feedback from the residents. A KMC building department source said the civic body sanctions around 250 building plans in a month.

Firhad Hakim, Mayor KMC, stated, “Initially, we had offered the option to submit manual drawings in case of complications. But now, we are convinced that the citizens are conversant with the online system and hence manual applications have been done away with."

One of the civic officials quoted, “In the manual mode, we needed at least 45 days to sanction even a simple plan without legal complications. Now, it takes barely a fortnight to complete the same work .”

One of the officials also explained, “We had no problems with the architects handling large housing projects. But, we had to train the surveyors for application of plans for apartment plots or individual houses under the new system to expedite the process for owners of small plots.”
