BBMP announces Property Auctions in Bengaluru for Unpaid Tax Arrears

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has announced plans to auction immovable properties of chronic property tax defaulters to recover outstanding dues.

Despite multiple warnings, several property owners have failed to clear significant tax arrears, prompting the civic body to initiate the auction process under Section 156(5) of the BBMP Act 2020.

A property in the east zone will be auctioned on February 5, while two properties in Dasarahalli and one in Bommanahalli are scheduled for auction on February 6.

The tax arrears amount to Rs. 1.8 crore and Rs. 30 lakh for the Dasarahalli properties, Rs. 31 lakh for the Bommanahalli property, and Rs. 11 lakh for the east zone property.

Munish Moudgil, Special Commissioner (Finance) at BBMP, stated that 8-10 auction sale notices have been issued so far, with more than 500 additional notices to follow in the coming weeks. He explained that after issuing an auction notice, there is a 10–15-day period for publicity and other arrangements before the auction takes place. However, if defaulters settle their dues before the auction date, the sale will be canceled.

Moudgil urged property owners to pay their taxes immediately to avoid such enforcement actions. Highlighting the gravity of the issue, he noted that over 2 lakh properties in Bengaluru are currently in arrears, warning that persistent non-payment would result in stricter recovery measures. BBMP’s drive aims to improve tax compliance and enhance its financial stability.
