Assam Govt to aid 6 families with Rs.30 lakh for demolishing their houses

The Assam Govt. has informed the Guwahati High Court that, it has paid a compensation of Rs.32.5 lakh to six families whose houses were demolished following an arson attack on a police station in central Assam two years ago.

The government has also approved compensation of  Rs. 2.5 lakh for the family of Safikul Islam, whose death was taken place in the police custody. The incident was followed by an arson attack in Batadrava police station by the outrageous mob. The court also declared that Islam’s family will be paid the compensation once they produce a next of kin certificate. 

 

At the time of public interest litigation (PIL) in the division bench headed by chief justice Vijay Bishnoi and justice Suman Shyam, the government the counsel D Nath submitted an affidavit detailing the compensation paid to the families who are residents of Batadrava.

The houses of the five families which were destroyed on May 22, 2022 by the Nagaon district administration because they claimed the construction as illegal. the authority also said that, the documents and records of the same were forged.

The authority did not send any notice of intimation to the families before the demolition. Recently, Assam government submitted affidavit to the court to give compensation to the affected families.

The government was agreed to pay Rs.10lakh for two concrete houses and Rs. 2.5 lakh each were paid for four ‘kuccha’ houses.

The court has also expressed concerns about the erring offcials who were connected with the demolition work.  The government counsel sought four weeks’ time to file a reply to which the bench agreed.
