Tucked away in the heart of Mumbai’s culturally rich Kala Ghoda district, Arjan Dugal’s designer menswear project, curated by Amina Bhatia, transcends conventional retail spaces, offering a sanctuary where heritage and modernity coalesce. Spanning 1100 square feet, this luxury retail store reflects the essence of its surroundings while embodying the refined sophistication of the brand.
The store’s location in the historic Kala Ghoda district, with its century-old architecture and vibrant cultural tapestry, serves as a significant muse for the design. Here, the juxtaposition of old-world charm and contemporary sophistication finds expression in every element of the space.
The heritage ceiling, soaring 16 feet high, becomes the centrepiece of this narrative, while the steel beams—one at the ceiling and another at 9 feet—are transformed from mere structural components into defining elements of the design. Amina ingeniously used these members to create a mezzanine floor and staircase, which became a major architectural feature in the store. With a keen eye for structure, Amina fashioned an entire floor out of these steel beams, adding layers to the store’s functionality and aesthetic appeal.
These beams, clad in rich wood at the lower level, act as both structural anchors and aesthetic statements, grounding the space in a warm, inviting ambience that bridges the gap between heritage and modernity. Upon ascending to the first floor, visitors are greeted by a breathtaking installation that immediately sets the tone for the space. A massive button art piece titled ‘CIAO!’—conceptualised by the designer, Arjan Dugal—dominates the entrance, serving as a bold visual and symbolic statement. This installation is more than a mere decorative element; it embodies the brand's commitment to sustainability and the empowerment of underprivileged women, weaving a narrative that is as socially conscious as it is aesthetically compelling. Sustainability is a recurring theme in the store's design. From retaining the original teak doors and windows to preserving the 120-year-old Burma teak rafters, every effort was made to minimise waste and honour the building's history.
Amina's eclectic style is masterfully reflected in the design of these stores, where her unique ability to blend diverse elements shines through. Her creative vision brings together a mix of personal and artistic influences, merging them into a cohesive and vibrant space. Amina's design ethos embraces contrasts and celebrates individuality, infusing each store with a dynamic energy.
Arjan passion for photography is displayed through the black and white photographs along with the feathered hat from the designer’s personal collection, highlighting them as visual focal points. These elements stand as a testament to sublime design collaboration in creating spaces that are both expressive and inviting, offering a rich and layered experience for anyone who steps inside.
At the heart of the store, the angled centrepiece seating serves as both a gathering point and a visual focal point. The monochromatic palette of this store area ensures that attention remains on the store's architectural splendour and the designer’s creations. This island seating design fosters a sense of openness and communication, creating a space where customers can pause, reflect, and engage with the environment around them. The space embodies the perfect balance of form and function, inviting warmth while enhancing the overall ambience of the store.
The current flagship store in Kala Ghoda is the culmination of this refined journey. This project stands out as a landmark in their collaboration, embodying a harmonious blend of heritage and modernity.
