Role of Steel Tubes in Decarbonizing Indian Construction Sector

In conversation with Charulatha, Correspondent, Homes India Magazine. Mohit shares his views about the construction industry reduce its carbon footprint while still maintaining the pace of high-rise building construction and some specific strategies or technologies that help achieve this balance.

Mr Mohit Kapoor is founder member of High-Power Working Group for Steel Promotion in India, Founder Member of Korea-India Green Hydrogen Forum, and Founder Member & Chairman of Events Committe in Warehousing Association of India.

Innovative construction materials that can be used to reduce environmental impact in high-rise building projects.

Developmental plans initiated without considering the environmental impacts not only tends to lose their social justification, but also fail to achieve the long-term commercially feasible outcome of the project.

The best part about any technology is the scope of upgradation and innovation, and the construction industry being one of the largest human activity on this planet directly affecting present and future of human race needs to pay due attention to thinking out of the box for introducing path breaking solutions.

Vertical expansion is the only way out to cater growing population’s increased demand of Residential-Commercial-Industrial space and Lighter/ stronger structure allow gains in vertical space

Steel tubes is among the most versatile construction materials providing multi-dimensional solutions of faster execution, economical construction, lower maintenance, safer designs and most importantly an environment friendly infinitely Recyclable product making our projects Sustainable in all aspects.

Much superior strength, easy to pre-fabricate, high volume to weight ratio, more ductility and higher load bearing capacity for better seismic and wind resilient code compliance define the best in-class performance of Steel Tubes on all technical parameters.

In addition, the effective commercial benefits such as 20 to 50 % faster construction, additional carpet area, clearer height and lower finance cost results in advanced Cash Flow and much better IRR.

The construction industry reduce its carbon footprint while still maintaining the pace of high-rise building construction and  some specific strategies or technologies that help achieve this balance.

With the fastest growing infrastructure development sector our country is the fifth-largest economy in the world, however India is the fourth greatest contributor to global carbon emissions as well.

The construction industry accounts for almost 30% of total pollution and annual seasonal blanket ban on construction activities imposed by NGT is actually a pain point for the resultant time wasting delays in projects and also a reason for monetary losses incurred by developer, contractor, client and loss of earning for daily wage earning labour class.

More than 40% greenhouse gases are generated during various stages of construction, starting from manufacturing and transportation of raw materials to fabrication activity and execution at project site.

In addition to numerous rigorous efforts undertaken for technological improvements in construction industry raw materials and the deployment of carbon neutral machinery, many national and international studies demonstrate that the use of steel tubes can lower the construction sector's carbon emissions by over 60%.

Steel tubes are a brilliant product for not just saving .To achieve the NET ZERO targets set by the Government of India in the New Delhi Declaration at the recently ended G20 summit Steel Tube construction seems a perfect solution to be adopted for techno-commercial benefits of industry and addressing the environmental concerns.

"Every kilogram of construction material reduced results in higher reduction in carbon emission due to less Greenhouse gases generated at each stage of raw material manufacturing, transportation, fabrication and construction activities at site."

Role does modular construction play in fast-tracking high-rise building projects, and contribute to sustainability goals and pollution reduction

The plug-and-play solution of steel tubes is best suited for fast-track execution and economically viable outcomes in construction sector for multiple reasons such as no pollution due to significantly low RCC usage, least water usage, reduced wastage of raw materials, time bound project completion, mitigation of on-site hazardous events with fabricated at factory and bolted at site mechanism.

Reduced size of columns & beams means 40% more usable/sellable area.

The absence of bar-bending and shuttering lowers on-site accidents.

Every kilogram of construction material reduced results in higher reduction in carbon emission due to less Greenhouse gases generated at each stage of raw material manufacturing, transportation, fabrication and construction activities at site.

Many studies have shown for example, a 28% reduction in tonnage of construction material can reduce 35% carbon emission making Steel Tubes a go-to solution for not just optimising project costs but also contributing in achieving Net Zero targets.

High-rise construction incorporate water-efficient systems and technologies, and advantages do they bring in terms of sustainability and resource conservation

In comparison to a conventional concrete-based structure, steel tubes frame building design requires almost no water for construction activities and no ground water absorption over the entire life of the building, thus significantly contributing to the conservation and righteous consumption of the most precious natural resources in an already alarming acute water shortage crisis across the length and breadth of India.
