Women architects are changing the face of the architectural landscape by defying expectations and making their presence known in a traditionally male-dominated field. They demonstrate that gender is not a barrier to architectural skill by bringing fresh insights and inventiveness to design. They are able to demand respect and encourage peer collaboration because of their dedication to moral principles and high standards. These women are laying the path for future generations and advancing architectural innovation by empowering themselves and their teams, proving that skill and drive overcome gender stereotypes.
Ar. Asumi Rawat, Founder of Asumi Rawat Desiign, is a skilled architect and interior designer with more than 24 years of expertise in the field. Asumi’s journey to become a successful architect began while she was a student of GD Arch at Rachana Sansad’s Academy of Architecture. Her first project was to design a 1,500 square foot home when she was still in her third year. Asumi started her interior design career by completing the job, even though she was hesitant at first because she didn’t have much expertise.
After that, she decided to take on a more difficult task which involved renovating her father’s Daman factory. Asumi took a local train to work every weekend and stayed on-site, where she became deeply knowledgeable about the intricacies of building materials and techniques. “From this experience, I learned how crucial it is to comprehend every facet of design, from conception to implementation. Real-world experience can be the best preparation for success in architecture and design”, adds Ar. Asumi Rawat.
She further gained experience under interior designer Sunil Jasani and at Fine Lines and managed everything from material selection to design conceptualization at this time, taking on a range of tasks and working on up to 10 projects annually. She gained essential project management and creative skills from her time at Fine Lines, which she utilized to launch Asumi Rawat Desiign in 2013.
Asumi currently leads a women-focused company, with 14 of her 18 team members being female. She has effectively expanded her business, overseeing ten to fifteen upscale residential projects a year. Asumi has worked on over 250 residential projects throughout the years, resulting in an exceptional portfolio. Her specialty is building bespoke homes, and she takes great satisfaction in how distinctive every project is. In contrast to many others in her industry, Asumi makes sure that no two houses or pieces of furniture are ever identical. From project conception to completion, she is intimately involved in every phase, guaranteeing excellent standards and meticulous attention to detail.
Based out of Mumbai, Asumi Rawat Desiign is a dynamic architecture and interior design studio which is known for its creative thinking and transparency with clients. The company makes sure that every project is efficient by using a full ERP system, which gives clear deadlines and a well-organized project management system that runs concurrently with the job. “A Material Delivery Organizer (MDO) provides clients with daily site progress reports in real-time by integrating WhatsApp and utilizing a Google dashboard. This transparent method helps us to build confidence by keeping clients fully informed and involved throughout the process”, asserts Asumi.
Asumi’s belief in learning via experience and emphasis on on-site work and actual project execution rather than just theoretical knowledge further supports the customized approach. The company also maintains a YouTube channel to share insights and creative design concepts.
I believe that it’s important to understand the client's lifestyle to ensure that each design is not only aesthetically beautiful but also practical & adapted to specific needs
Thoughtful Attention to Detail
Asumi Rawat is different from other designers, as she approaches every area of a project with great consideration and precise attention to detail. The Zota House is among her most treasured creations. She is presently working on the calm white Michelangelo-themed Azur house in Alibaug, which exemplifies her taste for subtle elegance and simplicity. Her designs go beyond aesthetics since she chooses materials that are appropriate for the local temperature and surroundings. She stays away from metals that corrode in coastal locations to ensure long-lasting quality. She put in a coil system under the flooring in one of her most notable projects in Prayagraj to keep the house warm throughout the chilly winters. These careful touches, which increase comfort while also increasing energy efficiency, never fail to please clients.
Being able to hand-sketch her drawings is what really sets Asumi apart. Even though her workplace now has cutting-edge technology, such as 2D and 3D renders, her ability to sketch helps her envision and design distinctive, customized areas. With her hand-drawn designs, Asumi stands out in the field of interior design in an era where AI-driven ideas are the norm.
A Comprehensive DIY Guide
Asumi’s upcoming book seems to be a must-have resource when it comes to creating their own spaces, whether it’s a home office for a mid-career professional or a nursery for a baby, The book offers readers useful insights on how various design aspects affect mood and functionality by covering a wide range of topics, from color psychology to Vastu Shastra. It tackles a range of life stages, including mid-marriage couples, the elderly, newlyweds, and babies, making sure that every space meets the specific demands of its users.
Asumi explains, for example, how gentle blues are relaxing to newborns while certain colors, like lemon yellow, might cause discomfort. She also explores how color psychology might improve harmony and productivity in home offices and family rooms. “Because the book is organized like a do-it-yourself guide, readers can use certain sections as a source of help, saving them money on hiring an architect for smaller jobs. This approachable manual, which will soon be available on Amazon, provides a plethora of information, making it accessible to anyone wishing to design thoughtful, unique environments that are appropriate for various stages of life”, informs Asumi.
Asumi goes beyond conventional metal and elaborate designs in her residential projects, experimenting with styles such as Japandi and Bohemian. Her palette of innovative ideas has been broadened by her increasing understanding of over 150 interior design styles, which she has recorded in her book. The book provides an extensive, illustrated overview of a variety of styles, from modern to neoclassical.
