Hirakud Dam's Canal Network set to be Renovated to eliminate Water Wastage

The renovation for canal network for Hirakud Dam in Odisha will soon start to minimize the wastage of water that are meant for irrigation. The State Government has already grant the fund of Rs.855 crore for renovation in the purpose of helping the farmers of Sambalpur,Subarnapur, Bargarh and Belangir districts.

The completion of the entire renovation is expected to be finished between the year 2024-2025 and 2027-2028 financial year respectively. All water system in the canal system which is created on earthen base will be transformed into concrete path for efficient water system and management.

 

The main goal of this project is to make water available by reducing to the level of usage of water and enhancing to accelerate the efficiency of canal system.

According to Water Resource Department ( WRD), the canal infrastructures in Bargah main canal and other distributors which were in a very bad condition will be utilize through new transition.The Hirakud Reservoir is one of the first major multi-purpose river valley projects after independence which was built around 1952-53.

It is the longest and one of the major earthen dam in the world,measuring 25.8 km including dykes  and stands across the river Mahanadi. The previous government has taken up Rs. 1,677 crore Gangadhar Mahar Lift irrigation project exercising Hirakud Dam Project.It is one of the state’s first underground piped irrigation project.
