Project Zephyr by The Design Compound: A Serene Urban Retreat in Pune

In the heart of Pune, a once-cramped apartment has undergone a remarkable transformation into a serene urban retreat that effortlessly blends contemporary aesthetics with timeless comfort.

Designed by Joohie Patel, Principal Designer at The Design Compound, this 1330 sq ft home reimagines everyday living through thoughtful design, light-filled spaces, and a warm, tactile material palette.

Bangalore-based design studio The Design Compound approached the project with a clear intent , which was to create a home that not only met the evolving needs of a family of four but also elevated their daily experience.

With a strong focus on cost efficiency and adaptive reuse, the apartment was completely revitalized without losing sight of its original structure.

The homeowners envisioned a space that could evolve with them. While the lady of the house, with her artistic sensibility, desired interplay of textures, color, and proportion, the couple’s pre-teen children needed adaptable spaces that could grow along with their interests. The result is a home that celebrates individuality while nurturing a shared sense of togetherness.

The core idea centered on openness and flow. An expansive layout allows natural light and air to move freely, making every corner feel calm and airy. Earthy pastel tones are paired with bold black accents, creating a soft yet modern atmosphere. Clean lines, minimal clutter, and clever spatial planning ensure that each area serves a purpose without overwhelming the senses.

Every detail in the home was thoughtfully considered. The children’s bedrooms feature floor beds with built-in storage, encouraging play and offering flexibility. Open shelving serves as a canvas for evolving art and collectibles, reflecting the family’s ever-changing stories. Existing wardrobes were rejuvenated using laminates, Duco finishes, and wallpapers, blending seamlessly into the refreshed interior while introducing tactile richness.

The material palette strikes a balance between simplicity and longevity, with muted hues of blush pinks, sage greens, and soft blues layered against warm wooden textures and understated taupes. Lighting plays a vital role in shaping the home’s mood, with layered arrangements that bring intimacy and comfort to each zone. Contemporary art, curated accessories, and plush furnishings add a final layer of depth, turning the space into a harmonious blend of functionality and aesthetic grace.

Project Zephyr clearly depicts what thoughtful design can achieve. It’s a home that is not just visually appealing but also deeply personal, practical, and enduring. It is a space that adapts, inspires, and embraces the joy of everyday living.
