Over 2.64 lakh Property Owners yet to pay Tax in Silicon Valley Bengaluru: BBMP

The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has identified 2,64,228 property tax defaulters across eight city zones, with pending dues totaling Rs.47 crore.

The report also referred that, the 3,95,253 property tax defaulters identified as of April 1, 2024, less than 35% have cleared their dues.

On the other hand, the data also showed that, BBMP has collected Rs.273 crore from 1.3 lakh defaulters as of September 1, 2024.

As its immediate result, BBMP started attaching properties and sealing non-residential areas. Till now, the authority attached nearly 49,500 properties and sealed over 4,500 non-residential areas in the ongoing financial year.

Previously, BBMP officials have issued demand notices for tax payment and seal the premises of defaulters. Now the authority can order to attach both the bank accounts and immovable properties of the defaulters.

The officials with authorization can eventually sell the attached assets for a distress sale to recover property taxes, penalties, interest charges, cesses and other levies.

The most number of properties have been attached in the East zone at 9,401, followed by West (9,088) and South (8,351). So far, more than 4000 properties have been attached each in Dasarahalli, RR Nagar and Yelahanka zones.

According to BBMP data, 1,317 non-residential properties have been sealed in the East zone and 1,034 in the West zone, with fewer than 500 properties sealed in each of the remaining six zones.

Mahadevapura in East Bengaluru, the city's highest tax-paying zone, also has the largest amount of outstanding dues, with Rs.116 crore owed by 56,346 defaulters. In contrast, Dasarahalli has Rs.17 crore in arrears from 17,956 defaulters.
