The government’s flagship housing initiative, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), for economically weaker sections, has completed 10 years since its launch in Ghaziabad, but none of the allotted housing units have been delivered. Despite efforts from both private developers and the government, the beneficiaries remain in a long waiting period.
PMAY planned the construction of 3,550 units in GDA-administered colonies and 6,150 units by private developers in various projects. While the GDA has 2,000 units ready in locations such as Madhuban Bapudham and Dasna, they cannot be handed over due to incomplete essential amenities.
Out of the 3,550 units planned in GDA colonies, 856 are located in the Madhuban Bapudham housing scheme, 432 in Dasna, 1,200 in Pratap Vihar, 400 in Noor Nagar, with the remaining units spread across other colonies.
A Senior Official from the GDA stated, "The housing complexes lack electricity, water, sewer connections, and an approach road. These critical amenities are still pending. We've contacted the PWD for the road, UPPCL for the electricity, UP Jal Nigam for water, and GMC for sewer lines, but the work has been delayed for years. We’ve been informed that the departments are waiting for the state government to release funds to move forward."
Regarding the more than 6,000 PMAY units to be built by private developers, none have been completed. "We consistently request updates from private developers on the status of their PMAY projects. Many have assured us that work is nearly finished and the flats will be delivered soon. Meanwhile, the GDA has issued directives to developers who are behind on delivering the units," the Official stated.
