Lift manufacturers and operators convened on Friday by the Noida district administration to talk about lift maintenance costs in the wake of the UP Lift and Escalator Act, 2024.
Residents claimed that lift manufacturers had raised their prices because the act required them to provide maintenance.
Authorities stated that they will talk with the manufacturers of the lifts to find a "middle ground" that would both allay resident concerns and pay for lift upkeep. A list of all the lifts installed in the city, together with their locations, will also be requested from the agencies, according to officials.
"We will assess adherence to the legislation and instruct organizations to register their elevators and follow protocols," stated Atul Kumar, additional district magistrate (ADM), finance and revenue.
"While the administration cannot set a rate for maintenance agencies, we will urge them to keep the rates minimum for housing societies," the ADM said.
A clause in the act requiring lift manufacturers to maintain and repair their equipment has alarmed locals, who fear monopolies and uncontrollable prices may result.
The Noida Federation of Apartment Owner’s Association's Rajiva Singh stated, "If lift manufacturers handled maintenance, it would mean better safety and original parts being used, but this monopoly could lead to exorbitant charges." Depending on the type of lift, an annual maintenance contract can cost anywhere from Rs. 10,000 to Rs. 50,000.
