Eighty building owners who are suspected of engaging in illegal construction have received notices from the municipal corporation (MC) requesting that they provide the necessary clearances and no objection certificates (NOCs).
The MC commissioner sent notices to the owners requesting that they provide documentation within 15 days, failing which they risk having their plots retaken or having unapproved structures demolished. Following the collapse of the Sohana building, the action was taken.
The mayor stated that while only three-storey buildings are allowed in the villages, many have violated regulations by constructing taller buildings.
According to Mohali mayor Amarjeet Singh Sidhu, also known as Jeeti Sidhu, "97 buildings were built as high-rises in violation of regulations, according to the MC survey. Eighty building owners have received notices requiring them to provide legitimate permits and documentation for the construction with MC within fifteen days, failing which they risk demolition. The MC commissioner has issued notices to those who are clearly in violation."
Notifications were issued following an emergency meeting called by Mayor Amarjit Singh Jeeti Sidhu with officials from the building branch, fire department, and MC commissioner T Benith, regarding unauthorised shops in villages under their jurisdiction.
He noted that unauthorized structures exist both inside and outside the designated red zones, and action will be taken against them.
He also mentioned that the building branch reported in the meeting that a survey is underway in all Mohali villages, and unapproved construction has stopped. The MC's engineering department is evaluating the structural integrity of buildings within the village red zones, and necessary action will be taken against any compromised structures based on the report.
