Concept
What was once a floor with four separate apartments has been transformed into a single, expansive, and luxurious home for a family of seven, a vision brought to life by Architect Swathy Sivaraman of StoreyBoard Design. The goal was to create a bespoke living space where each bedroom reflects the personality of its occupant while maintaining an overall harmony in design. For Swathy, design is the physical manifestation of convictions, inspirations, and ideas — a philosophy vividly expressed in this home through the “Elements of the Earth,” which subtly weave through its spaces.
The formal living area centres around a breathtaking custom-designed Sans Souci chandelier, a masterpiece of a thousand glass elements that emulate the flowing rivers of India. The dual-toned, wave-like glass pieces, layered at varying heights, bring this vision to life. To complement the chandelier's grandeur, the space incorporates beige suede laser-cut wall panels, heavy beaded curtains, and Turi furniture in beige and gold tones, creating a serene yet opulent atmosphere.
Upon entering the informal living room through a grand 10-foot automated metal-embossed wooden door, one is greeted by a luxurious Roberto Cavalli sofa in warm orange and tan hues, paired with a captivating mirror TV that doubles as an art piece. Marble-clad walls, organic-shaped consoles, and a low chaise lounge harmonize effortlessly, offering a glimpse of the elegance that defines the rest of the residence.
The dining area is a testament to craftsmanship, with a backdrop of mother-of-pearl inlays carved and set by local artisans within sleek metal frames. This exquisite feature highlights a marble dining table from Cornelio Cappellini, flanked by Roberto Cavalli chairs and illuminated by a floral-themed Sans Souci chandelier. A metal and veneer partition adds an element of privacy, perfect for hosting grand family dinners.
The puja room, aptly named "The White Pearl," embodies purity and peace. With sunlight streaming through a patterned jaali partition carved from monolithic white marble, the space exudes tranquillity. Mother-of-pearl sliding screens and a fixed glass backdrop enhance the ethereal quality, casting mesmerizing patterns of light and shadow.
Each bedroom was tailored to its occupant’s style. The master bedroom, a serene sanctuary, features marble and metal-inlaid jaali backdrops, a luxurious Turi bed, and large windows that bathe the room in sunlight. Layered curtains, patterned wooden flooring, and carefully curated furniture complete the ambiance. The son’s room is bold and masculine, with a striking Fendi headboard, suede-lacquered wall panels, and a sit-out space in hues of beige, gold, and blue.
His bathroom, a monolithic marble marvel, is designed as a personal spa with ample lighting and thoughtful details. In contrast, the daughter’s room exudes minimalistic chic with a Melerba bed, a stylish mirror TV, and a dreamlike walk-in closet fit for a celebrity. The grandfather’s and guest bedrooms, adorned with wood and marble accents, maintain a timeless elegance.
The home theatre, a 12-seater private escape, is a study in understated luxury. Plush suede ribbed acoustical panels, a Cineak system, and a mix of recliners and lounge seating provide comfort and sophistication. Unlike traditional dark-toned theatres, this space embraces light beige tones, with monolithic designs extending from the floor to the ceiling and accented by a rich wooden floor.
Transforming four apartments into one cohesive home posed significant challenges. Structural elements like columns, beams, and service ducts were seamlessly integrated into the design. Air conditioning ducts were cleverly concealed within metal jaalis to maintain high ceiling heights. A visual barrel of louvered battens and tinted mirrors camouflages a large service shaft, balancing functionality with aesthetic appeal.
The result is a residence steeped in luxury, with every detail meticulously considered. Marble carvings, gold-foiled ceilings, crystal chandeliers, and mother-of-pearl inlays add layers of sophistication.
A pristine white show kitchen and a fully functional wet kitchen ensure practicality while maintaining elegance. Hidden utility spaces for laundry and storage, seamlessly tucked into corridors designed as gallery walkways, enhance the home's functionality without compromising its grandeur.
This residence is a triumph of thoughtful design, blending personal expression with a unified aesthetic, offering a luxurious interpretation of modern living while creating a warm, inviting home for a family to cherish.
