Maharashtra Govt to allow Property Registration at any Sub-Registrar Office by April

By the end of April, citizens in Maharashtra can register land or property documents at any sub-registrar office, irrespective of the property’s location. This is part of the "One State, One Registration" initiative announced by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, according to Ravindra Binwade, inspector general of registration and stamps.

“A Mumbai resident will no longer need to travel to Pune to register a property sale deed. They can complete the process at their local sub-registrar office,” Binwade explained, noting that the move aims to reduce congestion at registration offices and speed up processing times.

To meet the chief minister’s 100-day deadline, the department is upgrading its hardware and software systems in collaboration with the National Informatics Centre. Binwade emphasized that all 519 sub-registrar offices in Maharashtra must be prepared to handle documents from any location.

E-registration for first-sale properties by builders is already operational, and the department plans to further expand digital services to minimize office visits. "We are analyzing office usage patterns. Underutilized offices may be closed, while districts lacking facilities will see new offices established," he added.

Real estate experts have praised the initiative but highlighted the need for stringent checks. “This will eliminate the hassle of long-distance travel and hotel bookings, but strong safeguards are crucial,” said a member of a real estate brokers’ association.

Meena Kaushik, a Satara resident with property in Pune, welcomed the move, saying it will ease overcrowding at registration offices.

Since taking over from Hiralal Sonawane, Binwade has been reviewing procedures and regulations. "We are prepared to make necessary amendments to streamline the process and curb corruption," he affirmed.
