Kolkata Civic Authority thrashes freshly constructed Building in Tangra

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) is set to begin the demolition of an unauthorized building on Christopher Road next week, which has been identified as the cause of the tilt in the adjacent Pushpanjali Apartment.

This step comes after an investigation and report by structural engineer Snehasish Sinha, who was appointed by KMC to assess the site in Tangra. The illegal building, constructed without approval, has been blamed for compromising the structural integrity of the G+5 Pushpanjali Apartment.

Sinha’s report recommended demolishing the unauthorized building first and monitoring the effect of this action on the stability of the tilted apartment.

Based on this advice, the KMC has decided to proceed with the demolition while ensuring precautions are taken to safeguard nearby structures.

KMC officials, led by Mayor Firhad Hakim, convened meetings to discuss the findings and strategize the next steps. The mayor emphasized a strict stance against unauthorized constructions, stating, “We won’t spare the illegally constructed building that has caused this situation.” He reiterated the importance of upholding civic laws to prevent similar incidents in the future.

To ensure safety during the demolition process, residents of Pushpanjali Apartment may be temporarily relocated, though the KMC has assured them the building remains structurally safe for now. Aparna Nandi, a senior citizen living on the second floor, expressed relief over the assurances but remained cautious. “The situation is concerning, but we’ve been told it’s safe to stay,” she said.

Residents are anxiously awaiting the results of the demolition, hoping it will resolve the instability issue. The KMC’s actions reflect its broader commitment to tackling unauthorized constructions and maintaining urban safety standards. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by illegal developments and the need for strict regulatory enforcement.
