The Indore Municipal Corporation (IMC) has identified around 6,000 residential structures affected by the construction of 22 major roads and riverside development projects. However, only about 200 flats are currently available to relocate the displaced families, forcing the civic body to prioritize certain projects.
According to official data, IMC has marked 2,875 residential, commercial, and industrial properties as obstacles in road construction, along with 97 religious structures. Additionally, nearly 3,000 mostly residential buildings within 30 meters of the highest flow levels of the Saraswati and Kanh rivers are set for removal under the river rejuvenation initiative.
IMC has secured Rs. 511 crore under the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMGC) for river restoration, alongside budget allocations for road construction. However, due to a shortage of flats, IMC is prioritizing projects accordingly. The civic body is currently constructing 1,047 one-BHK flats under the PMAY scheme for displaced families, with only about 200 units ready for occupancy.
"Our main focus is road construction to improve traffic flow and commuter convenience," said IMC Commissioner Shivam Verma. He added that of the 3,000 structures identified for road projects, only about 5-7% will be completely demolished. Families whose homes are fully razed will be eligible for relocation flats.
A survey will be conducted to identify eligible families, Verma stated. He also mentioned that IMC has sufficient flats for immediate resettlement and plans to build additional units under NMGC for those displaced by the riverside development, with a proposal to be submitted to relevant authorities.
