CM Mamata Banerjee launches new Housing Scheme 'Banglar Bari' in West Bengal

Tuesday saw the launch of the housing program "Banglar Bari," which is fully funded by the government of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. She has been accusing the BJP government at the federal level of not providing funds to the state under the PM Awas Yojana.

The chief minister gave 42 beneficiaries from 21 districts the first installment of the scheme, which is Rs. 60,000, at a function held at the state secretariat in Nabanna.

She also mentioned that the recipients would receive the funds in two installments, with recipients in remote and some Junglemahal areas receiving Rs. 1.30 lakh rupees.

Speaking at the function, Banerjee stated that the state had conducted a survey that identified over 28 lakh genuine beneficiaries of the scheme, and that by December of next year, 1.2 lakh would be transferred to them. She added that before the state's 2026 Assembly elections, 16 lakhs more beneficiaries would receive housing allowance.

"I have devoted my life to serving others. I started the "Banglar Bari" project today in the interest of the rural Bengali people. About 36 lakh families have already been surveyed by the Center. We also carried out a single survey. Their objections and claims were also verified, and a draft list was also released. More than 28 lakh beneficiaries could be found, she said.

The chief minister said, "The central government has deprived the poor people of the state of their dues for the past three years," accusing it of breaking its word and failing to pay a single paisa for the "Awas Yojana." We are not panhandlers; we just want our rights to be upheld."
