State-level surveys will determine the number of houses for each state for the next five years.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban 2.0 scheme, which was approved by the cabinet in August, has already sanctioned 612,000 houses, out of a target of 10 million.
Minister of housing and urban affairs Manohar Lal Khattar said that an additional 100,000 houses will be pre-approved once the remaining three to four states sign the agreement.
The minister explained that the decision to approve houses in advance was taken to speed up the construction process.
State-level surveys will be used to announce the number of houses for each state for the next five years, so applicants will know when they will be allotted a house. The first tranche of central assistance corresponding to the approved numbers is set to arrive soon.
The PMAY-U 2.0 initiative will also include a similar survey to assess the need for rental housing for working women, industrial workers, urban migrants, homeless individuals, students, and other eligible beneficiaries.
The figures are based on the urban population from the 2011 Census. State like Uttar Pradesh (110,000), Maharashtra (52,000), Andhra Pradesh (50,000), Gujarat (50,000), and West Bengal have the highest share of pre-approved sanctions, while smaller states such as Goa have been allocated 500 units.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) has been signed with three central nodal agencies, which are working with 150 banks and housing finance companies, for the interest subsidy scheme under the flagship housing program.
